About the Project

The Co-location Project will provide new accommodation for the Menzies Research Institute and the Tasmanian School of Medicine (currently located at the Royal Hobart Hospital and Sandy Bay campuses) together with a number of Faculty of Health Sciences administrative functions.

The Co-Location project was launched in November 2005 with initial planning for the development focused on a site next door to the Theatre Royal. Preliminary investigations found this site to be unsuitable for the purposes of this project. During 2006 new site acquisition processes were undertaken. The new facilities will be built on the site of the old Menzies Research building and acquired adjacent sites to ensure a land size adequate for the proposed building and future expansion if required. The building will front on to the corner of Campbell and Liverpool Streets. This is a major project for the University of Tasmania with a budget in the order of $48 million. The Co-Location project is due for completion and occupancy in November 2009.

Extensive analysis has been carried out to assess the history of the site, visual amenity, how the building will sit on the site and what impact the new building will have on the city itself given its location at a gateway to the city's CBD.
